Fall 2013 may be from Mars, but Spring 2014 has her heels on Earth- even if her head is in the clouds. A stark contrast with Fall’s high tech, futurist fabrics and holographic accessories - as demonstrated on the limbs of lovely Aimee Song - this season’s runway demonstrated a stripped down, contemporary romance for the here and now. But where there was romance, there was nothing too literal (so put your Sparks novel away). The frilly and saccharine were cast away, in favor of understated peplums and ruffles peppered throughout the otherwise easy, pared down silhouettes. The hair and makeup were an effortless take on classic beauty: fuss free tresses, glowing skin, red lips, and milky white tips. Nothing too polished and always at ease, even on the go - this gal is no damsel in distress. She’s too busy making the first move and writing her own love story.
Before Nanette Lepore’s models floated down the runway, my dear friend / extraordinary photographer Allister Ann and I visited backstage to document the story behind the scenes. You might even call it Nanette’s new romance, with every little detail being her own labor of love. The energy backstage was both casual and chaotic, conflicting as that may seem, with models lounging on the floors, playfully hiding beneath the racks, snacking away, and reading well-worn novels while being primped by multiple sets of artful hands. Allister’s and my individual methods of seeking coverage are equally antithetical to one another, with her fully immersed and always snapping away, never missing a moment - and me, doing my best to assimilate to the walls and floors, occasionally sneaking a quick picture and ducking back out of traffic to stay out of the way. It’s for this reason that I’ve assigned Allister the title of “my right hand gal,” even though it’s likely she’s also my left - and perhaps my feet, too. While I waited to see the final look, her photographs captured everything that led up to it. The textures and little nuances we don’t always catch on the runway, the countless people who made it all happen, and the candid moments between them - that’s where the love lies, and I’m grateful we could share it with you.
